How to Make Delicious Instant Pot Rice in 10 Minutes (Plus, 4 Recipes to Try)

Half Baked Harvest

Rice has the ability to make any savory meal better. From meat dishes to stir-fries, to seafoods-including the obvious, sushi-rice creates a complementing texture to it all. If only it didn't come with so many strings.

A stovetop can cook rice unevenly, or make it absorb too much water. A rice cooker can be easier, depending on the type of rice, but it can also take up too much space. So what's the best compromise? An Instant Pot. Ever since this electric pressure cooker became a must-have kitchen appliance, it has shown how accommodating it can be to other various time-consuming and complicated tasks. An Instant Pot can make mashed potatoes and hard-boiled eggs. It can take care of dry beans and grits. And in case you needed another reason to love it, it can also manage white rice.

If you're tired of making rice that's either overcooked or undercooked, or you simply don't have the time or space to devote to it, follow these instructions for makingВ Instant Pot white rice that's everything this classic grain should be.

Getting Started:

It must be said that the best way to cook rice in an Instant Pot is to have a much-coveted accessory to the appliance: a coated, non-stick, stainless steel inner pot. The standard Instant Pot is great for heftier items, like the various meats and stocks everyone raves about, but it can also overheat and clump rice. Not the non-stick inner pot, which has a slippery ceramic coating that helps distribute the heat evenly and keep the rice from sticking. Note that if you have this secondary pot, too, then you can make two aspects of a complete dish in the Instant Pot-a main and a side-just by switching them out as you go.

Nevertheless, if you don't have this item, don't sweat it. The biggest thing to remember is that the ratio between rice and water with this appliance is one to one. You'll want to rinse your cups of rice in water before placing it in the Instant Pot, to remove some of its starch, and then add in the equivalent amount of water. If you don't have the non-stick pot, it's also a good idea to add a teaspoon of oil to the bottom of the standard pot for every cup of rice you're making. That way, the rice will likely keep from sticking.

Cooking the Rice:

Thankfully, rice has a pre-set button on the Instant Pot. So once you have the aforementioned ingredients inside, close the lid and seal the steam valve. Then, select the "rice" button, and white rice will cook for about four minutes. Give the Instant Pot around 10 minutes to completely release the steam inside the pot, and then release the pressure from the valve.

Not the biggest fan of white rice? Brown rice will take about 20 to 25 minutes to cook, and wild rice can take up to 30 minutes. Whichever you choose, the Instant Pot has it covered.
